What is a Social Entrepreneur?

Social Entrepreneurs are those who identify sustainable solutions to social problems, and who use for-profit business ventures to increase the scope of their solutions.

The basic requirements of all entrepreneurs:

Prefer to work for themselves
Set their own hours
Value their time freedom
Believe that being self-employed will ultimately pay them more

Social entrepreneurs have one more requirement...

To do something that matters

Social enterprises can be either non-profit or for-profit businesses.  What sets them apart is that they are launched by social entrepreneurs who want to make a difference in a new, more effective and lasting way than traditional approaches.

They are the new entrepreneurs—those who understand how profitable business and giving back can work in tandem.  Fueled by growing awareness that traditional approaches to charity and business are not adequate to solve the problems we face today, social entrepreneurs use what’s known as a blended-value business model.

They combine smart business practices with global outreach to make a profit and have a valuable and lasting impact in the world around them.  They work not only for their own abundance and security, but for others as well.  This is known as the 3 Pillars, or the Triple Bottom line:  They measure the impact on people, and on the planet, as well as on their profit margin.

“One of the remarkable things that we’ve been able to do as a company is to allow people to give expression to their own yearnings to stand for something more than making money- to have what they do every day impact the lives of children who are affected by some of the world’s hardest problems.”

–Steve Lund, Executive Director of Nourish the Children

What
matters now

Self- Sufficiency

As a social business initiative, Nourish the Children facilitates consistent and increasing food donations by offering an incentive to buy, donate, and promote VitaMeal. This commission is included in the price of the food and allows distributors to invest their time and resources to encourage others to join the cause against malnutrition.

VitaMeal donations are generally distributed through school programs because parents living in poverty will often send their children to school for a free meal, rather than keep them home to work. Your donation is increased with a corporate match program where Nu Skin matches one bag for each eight bags purchased.

And Sustainability

Some of the proceeds from VitaMeal purchases are donated to the Nu Skin Force for Good Foundation to fund agricultural education at Mtalimanja Village in Malawi. Increased farm production could someday alleviate the need for food assistance in Malawi.

Additional proceeds from VitaMeal go to furthering the NTC initiative by building VitMeal plants which create jobs, help boost local economies and reduce transportation costs. There are currently three VitaMeal production plants in the United States, Malawi and China.

Who's got your back?

A billion dollar corporate partner

Nu Skin is a for-profit distributor of nutritional and skin care products in 48 countries and is traded on the New York Stock exchange (NUS). See the published annual report at www.nuskinenterprises.com

Nourish the Children is an initiative of Nu Skin and is registered in some states as a commercial co-venture. This program leverages the strength and staying power of a for-profit corporation in cooperation with the charitable donations program and logistical distribution programs of Feed The Children to help solve the complex world problem of feeding malnourished children.

Each bag of VitaMeal provides 30 meals and can feed one child for a month. The price charged by Nu Skin for VitaMeal includes the costs of manufacturing, general overhead, distribution, sales, and commissions to Nu Skin distributors, as well as a reasonable profit margin to help further the NTC initiative. Total commissions paid to Nu Skin distributors average slightly more than 40 percent of Nu Skin’s total product sales. The commission for VitaMeal includes a specialized bonus not offered for any other company product. Distributors and customers who commit to ongoing support and encourage others to do the same are recognized as Nourish the Children Ambassadors or Chief Ambassadors.
